This weekend Washington DC is hosting the Right Wing loony convention aka the Value Voters Summit. Mitt Romney wisely stayed away - although he sent a video and Rep. Paul Ryan in his place. (I am sure Paul thanked him for this privilege). He will get to appear on the schedule along with such loony favorites as Rep. Michelle Bachman, Glenn Beck, Sen. Rick Santorum ("we will never have the elite smart people on our side"), fake terrorist turned evangelical Christian Kamal Saleem, Rep. Steven King, Rep. Allen West, Col. Oliver North, Muslim conspiracy theorist Frank Gaffney, and anti-Muslim crusader Lt. Gen. William Boykin. There are about 50 speakers on the list and some of them I don't know much about so maybe its unfair to label it as a 100% loony convention - maybe say 85%.
One main focus of the convention appears to be the threat that Islam plays to America. I would think that if you are running for Vice President you would not want to alienate Muslim voters by appearing with some of these wackos...but maybe he doesn't have a lot lose either. 70% of US Muslims already identify themselves as Ds or lean D while only 11% of US Muslims identify themselves as Rs or lean R (see here).
